Established in January 1920 on the ratification of the treaty of Versailles
The stated object of the organisation was to keep peace in the world and to be arbitrating institute for international disputes. Although the idea to establish such organisation came from US President Wilson, the USA did not join the organisation. After signing the treaty of Locarno in 1925, Germany became a member of the council of the organisation. The Nazis regarded the League as an agency of the Allied Powers, who forced upon Germany the hated Versailles settlements. On October 1933 Hitler decided that Germany would leave the League.
